Even though the island is very much modern and bustling, the feel you get is always going to be of an “old town” with lively fish markets, The Jahazis (traditional Arab sailing boats), floating away and captivating architecture.
Must do, during your beach vacation is a Tamarind Dhow Cruise for either lunch (1300 – 1500 hours) or dinner (1830 – 2230 hours). The Jahazis were formally used for cargo trading. They have been refurbished as floating restaurants, but have maintained all other aspects or their originality.
Coral Life
The shoreline in the area features white sand beaches and offshore coral formations arranged in different bays and beach: Garoda Beach, Turtle Bay, Blue Lagoon Bay, Watamu Bay, Ocean breeze, and Kanani reef and Jacaranda beach. They are protected as part of the Watamu Marine National Park.
The Marine Park is considered one of the best snorkeling and diving areas on the coast of East Africa. It is also rated the third-best beach in Africa, for its crystal clear water and silver sand beaches.
The Marine Park
The park's coral reefs form the physical and biological backbone of the area. With over 150 species of hard and soft corals, such as brain corals, fan corals and sponges, it provides for abundant nutrients for fish. The main park has over 500 species of fish and the reserve over 1000.
Visitors can enjoy the white sandy beaches, snorkeling, water skiing, windsurfing and glass bottomed boat tours.
